New Providence Historical Society

Due to the rainfall that we have had over this past week, with more forecasted showers for Saturday morning, we have decided to cancel the event for Saturday, May 7 and proceed with this event taking place on the rain date of Saturday, May 14, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
We hate to go with a rain date, but for the sake of our vendors; volunteers; the public; and the soggy Salt Box grounds; we needed to make this decision.

The New Providence Historical Society will hold its Annual Meeting on April 14th at the Murray Hill Inn & Suites at 6PM. This dinner commemorates the Society’s 50th Anniversary. Our guest speaker, Linda Barth, will talk about the rich history of the Delaware & Raritan Canal.

Reservations must be received by April 5th. The cost is $35 per person. Checks for dinner and membership may be combined. Send checks to the Mason Room, New Providence Memorial Library, 377 Elkwood Avenue, New Providence, NJ 07974, c/o Margaret Maurer.

Please join us for our first Open House of 2016, in our mid 1800’s farmhouse. So, come pay us a visit as winter recedes for our Golden Jubilee year!

There will be a Trustee’s Meeting of the New Providence Historical Society at 2PM on December 17th in the Mason Room, located at the rear of the New Providence Memorial Library. You don’t have to be a Trustee to attend. Come and learn what’s going on. Volunteers are always needed. If you can’t attend the meeting, but would still like to volunteer contact us at 1-908-655-1034.

Please join us for our annual Holiday Open House, in our mid 1800’s Farmhouse. We’ll have refreshments, as well as a selection of our archive photo albums containing photos of yesteryear New Providence, Also available are copies of Images of New Providence. These books make great stocking stuffers! So, come pay us a visit before our Saltbox closes for the winter!

The Salt Box Museum will once again participate in the Four Centuries in a Weekend event.

This event includes 27 diverse historic sites in Union County, from humble farmhouses to extravagant mansions, which share the story of our evolution from the Colonial era Elizabethtown of 1664.

Salt Box Museum Hours:

• Saturday, October 17, 10 AM – 5 PM
• Sunday, October 18, 12 Noon – 5 PM

Docents will be stamping “passport” for those particiapting school children. The Salt Box Museum is located at 1350 Springfield Avenue, New Providence, NJ.

Join us for guided tours of the Salt Box House and all it’s artifacts and exhibits on Sunday, August 2nd, 1-3 PM.  Learn about the history of New Providence and beyond.

The next open house will be Sunday, September 13th, 1-3 PM

American Legion Post 433 of New Providence, New Jersey will conduct its annual Flag Retirement Service on Flag Day, Sunday, June 14, 2015, beginning at 7 pm. The Legion will properly destroy approximately 3,000 United States flags that have been worn by use and the passage of time. The New Providence Police Honor Guard will participate in this service, and the Honorable Al Morgan, Mayor of the Borough of New Providence will speak. All are welcome to attend this service, which will be held outside the Legion at 357 Elkwood Avenue.
