Founded in 1792 by Alexander Hamilton and the Society for Useful Manufactures, Paterson, New Jersey became the first planned industrial city in the United States. But it didn’t happen overnight. Paterson’s history goes much further back before the establishment of the S.U.M., and the major industries that made Paterson world-renowned in industries such as silk, locomotives and airplane engine production.
